Featured Reviews / Press
Valley of Butterflies (harp solo)
"Tiger Swallowtail", "Dragonfly!" and "Ottoman Fire" are surely not names of movements, which one would immediately associate with the mystic sound of a harp. When enjoying "Valley of Butterflies", written in 2011 by Garrett Byrnes, the boundaries of stylistic restrictions disappeared, with the piece being brilliantly adapted for the capabilities of the harp.
- Axel Angel, Westfalische Nachrichten (German) (Sep 12, 2013)
Solace (orchestra)
"...the hammered accents and force of "Solace" by Garrett Byrnes brought Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" to mind, though, clearly he has his own voice."
- Michael Anthony, Star Tribune (Minneapolis, St. Paul and Minnesota)
Bagatelle for LvB (piano solo)
“Nicholas Underhill presented a polished performance of Garrett Byrnes' Bagatelle for L.v.B. (2011), an impish work that inventively incorporates Beethoven’s Ode to Joy theme as well as other fragments from the composer's piano scores including an interrupting statement from the Waldstein sonata.”
- Mike Telin, ClevelandClassical.com (Mar 28, 2012)
Cosmopolitan Etudes (piano solo)
"Several times I wrote "Wow!" next to a work... Garrett Byrnes' "Cosmopolitan Etude Number 7", chock-full of tricks and trouble... contained breath-taking twists or tantalizing passages."
- Peter Jacobi, The Herald Times
Visions in Twilight (harp solo)
"...those big, swirling outbursts [Visions in Twilight] can’t disguise the music’s inherent warmth and variety. Once again the range of techniques on display is simply astonishing..."
- Dan Morgan, MusicWeb International
Devil in Moscow (viola & piano)
"Closing the evening was "Devil in Moscow" (2009) by Garrett Byrnes based on Bulgakov's novel, "The Master and Margarita." The sisters projected vividly the composer's shades of diabolical play, from the impish to the eerie (including a lengthy third movement allusion to Liszt's Mephisto Waltz No. 1)."
- New York Concert Review Inc. Magazine
Visions in Twilight (harp solo)
"Although executed with brilliance... I am not rushing to play [Berio's Sequenza]. Using many of the same extended techniques, however, the piece by Byrnes [Visions in Twilight]... sounded fresh and beautiful, woven with intricate colours, telling stories and certainly highlighting the capacity that the concert harp has for creating an outstanding array of timbres and keeping an audience spellbound for a whole concert!"
- Arts in Fusion: Highly Strung Blog
Visions in Twilight (harp solo)
"It was never known that you could shoot fire-arrows from a harp. Salzedo didn't include thunder, but the American composer Garrett Byrnes took care of that: In his piece Visions in Twilight, composed five years earlier, Meijer let the bass strings make a wild, explosive sound.
- Frits van der Waa; Translation: K.P. Clark, Volkskrant (Dutch)
Songs of the Sea (soprano & piano)
"Byrnes' powerful settings of the poems give vivid pictorializations of the texts. 'Songs of the Sea' requires a mature singer and pianist for worthy performance."
- National Association of Teachers of Singing
Phasing Tides (clarinet, cello & piano with tape)
"Water sounds were used in Garrett Byrnes' Phasing Tides... Byrnes' mellifluous timbres melded with a large, constantly moving ocean."
- Bruce Hodges, Seen and Heard International (Live Concert Reviews Blog)
Solace (orchestra)
"Garrett Byrnes’s Solace is an aggressive and cinematic work infused with moments of delicate beauty featuring the harp and celesta". (from Mazzoli, music Blog - Days Four and Five: The Blindfold Comes Off)
- NY composer Missy Mazzoli's New Music Box blog for the American Music Center
Amhrán Slán (harp solo)
"The notable pieces for me were... 'Amhrán Slán' by Garrett Byrnes... I recommend checking it out. It really is beautiful."
- Note to Self Harp Blog
Visions in Twilight (harp solo)
"Meijer amazed the audience with her fabulous technique in the experimental 'Visions in Twilight' from G. Byrnes. All the possibilities of the harp were brought to their fullest in this piece." (Translated from Dutch)
- Noordhollands Dagblad (Dutch Newspaper)
Visions in Twilight (harp solo)
"Visions in Twilight, an impressive work by American Garrett Byrnes, is mysteriously evocative, but it also creates a sense of high and sometimes unsettling drama, as if these twilight visions may not be entirely benevolent."
- Stephen Eddins, AMG AllMusic Guide to Classical Music
Visions in Twilight (harp solo)
"...she’s [Meijer] chosen to update those traditional, romantic associations using modern music. The result is startling, challenging and exhilarating. Banishing preconceptions, this recital is most compelling when she plays music by composers she knows – notably Byrnes’s Visions in Twilight."
- Classic FM
