This book of etudes was written during a short European trip through the countries of France, Switzerland and Italy at the end of July 2002. Since all but the last etude were written entirely on the three to six hour train rides I made between cities, they were brief studies in composition for me as well as studies for the pianist. I focused on simple ideas and forms to ensure the completion of each etude within the allotted travel time on the trains.
 
Cosmopolitan Etudes: Book 1 was premiered by pianist Jihye Chang in Bloomington, Indiana on October 29, 2002.
